Three comrades earn a Commie salute

Kudos go out this week to ace reporter Mitzi Ponce and managing editor/ad sales maven William R. Toler for their invaluable contributions to the March issue of the Campus Communicator.

Mitzi's three stories were all well-written and solidly researched, but her Charlotte Rhone feature and A1 story on the Craven Cup controversy stood out as exceptional. In the latter article, clarity of reporting shone through the mudslinging and painted a balanced portrait of the Cup's proponents as well as its detractors.

William excels in just about every capacity, but currently, he is blazing the advertising trail, racking up more than $300 in sales for the newspaper between this month and next. As the managing editor, his duties are confined to administrating and guiding the news staff, but he has voluntarily shouldered the advertising burden and has become the No. 1 salesperson. Not too shabby for someone who, in a perfect world, shouldn't have to sell advertisements at all.

Dawn Whitmore also deserves mention for her profile feature on new Community Relations Coordinator Sandy Wall. Dawn employed a captivating lead and drove it home with a solid, well-organized story.

Please let these individuals know how much we appreciate their efforts in the comments section of this blog.

April

The April Fool's issue, although met with some negativity, will be awesome! (Sorry, I stole Eric's word)

Two of the Onion-stlye articles actually feature yours truly.

This will be my crowning achievement and contribution to the paper.

March issue nears completion

We're actually ahead of schedule.

Our March edition is finished, save for an Op-Art photo illustration and final ad checks. Hopefully, this will give us more time to work on the Campus Commie, our annual April Fool's Day edition, a paper chock full of satire, humor and vitriol.

The student publications room is chilly. We need a fireplace in here.

Calling all Commies

Welcome to the Campus Communicator weblog, the informal online staff hangout for Craven Community College's student newspaper of record..

In the coming weeks, this blog will feature sporadic updates from the reporters, editors and salespeople in the trenches at Craven. I hope it will become an indespensible discussion board for "Commies" and will encourage greater communication between staff members and Campus Communicator readers.

In keeping with our committment to student press freedom, bloggers will be permitted to upload their posts directly. Blog entries will not be censored, removed or otherwise vetted unless they contain libelous, plagiarized or tacitly untrue material. The corollary to this priviledge is the understood responsibility to make intelligent decisions about what is and isn't appropriate to post.

Disclaimer: This weblog was begun off-campus and is not affiliated with, endorsed or sponsored by Craven Community College or the N.C. Community College System. The opinions expressed are those of the writers and do not necessarily represent the viewpoints of college administrators or the student-run newspaper's editorial position.

Have fun!
